Down And Derby

Drew's very first Pinewood Derby is tonight. He and his dad our friend with all the power tools have had a lot of fun making it. These events have a tendency to bring out the worst in people, and Cory overheard a conversation at church where someone said, "I just really don't want what happened last year to happen this year." (???) We weren't there, so I don't know what he's talking about. So, we're just hoping Drew has fun and learns good sportsmanship. (Translation: We're hoping he takes 1st.)

I TOTALLY hope we don't repeat last year! Lots of tears, a botch computer system, and WAY too much adult ego on the line.

Oh, I mean, have fun!

We have pinewood derby next week too! My son made his car look like a slice of pizza.
I remember our first Pinewood derby with our oldest son. He did a really great job on the car (we actually had him put it together himself) and it looked fabulous!
When we got to the race, these other dads were changing the placement of the weights under the cars and rubbing stuff on the wheels (graphite. get some if you expect to have an even remote chance of winning)
I was amazed at how serious they were being about the "kids" activity.
Our son's car cam in last in every race, so the next year we went to the hobby store and got all the fancy dodads for the car.

That year, our son won.

Seriously, go to the hobby store and get yourself some graphite, because winning is everything.

Tanner's first pine wood derby was such a disappointment, well to me anyway. There was no winner, they just let the boys let them go down the track. Hello??? Where is the fun in that. And to make matters worse, they let all the little kids crowd around the bottom of the track so you couldn't even see if the cars made it down the track. I hope Drew's was better organized and of course I hope he kicked butt! Didn't his potatoe derby car come in first?? Because I have blocked out the results of that race seeing that my "car" almost didn't even finish.

I'm a lurker...hi. I just had to tell you; at my son's first pinewood derby, the car MY HUSBAND made(impatient with the "helping the kid" thing) won a prize for "Most Obviously Kid Made Car". We still get a laugh out of that1!!

Pinewood Derby's should be outlawed! Seriously.

My (now ex) husband decided to take an interest in our son’s Pinewood Derby efforts by applying what he assumed was graphite to the wheels right before the race. It was not graphite . . . it was superglue.
