Home

Two weeks we have been gone, during which periodic comments were dropped about how winter was finally making a bold statement back home in Denver. Such as, "Oh, I hear they got two feet the last couple of days! The airport had to close down," to which I replied, "Bummer. Hey, wanna go get ice cream?" Or, "Hey, I heard the temperatures in Denver are in the single digits," and I'd say, "Huh. I'll be sure to have a moment of silence when we get down the beach." But then we went to Mexican food after and I forgot.

Because you see, Denver has not always been my home. THIS. THIS made more sense to me. The football throwing and looking for seashells while walking among the palm trees was my ritual growing up. Even in December, it felt perfectly normal. When we left San Diego this morning it was almost 70 degrees. When we landed in Denver it was in the 20's, an advertised improvement over the previous days.

After walking in the door of our house I declared it was "good to be home" for the sake of the children and then in an attempt to salvage some of my California juices that were fighting to stay alive, suggested we dine at our favorite Mexican place for dinner. Which we did, but somehow the festive pink walls and over-sized sombreros just don't scream "Ole!" when one is wearing a winter coat.

Why do I live here again?

Them's fightin' words. Just for that, you get a top 10 list.
10. There are no earthquakes
9. There are seasons
8. Your home will not burn down because of a fire started by some punk-ass kids 20 miles away
7. You are drinking water created in your own state
6. You can actually exceed the posted speed limit on the freeway if you so choose
5. Your governor has never said 'Hasta la vista, baby' in public
4. People who are friendly are not weirdos
3. There is real skiing
2. There are real mountains
1. You couldn't buy a trailer in San Diego for the current value of your home in Denver

Wow, what can I say after that! I love Colorado too, but seeing as your nostrils don't freeze together when you step outside in the winter here, I'd say I have vastly improved my situation from where I grew up! Welcome back!

#11. I'm here!
I just can't get on boards with the idea of walking around in shorts in December. Christmas is SUPPOSED to be snowy and cold. How many Christmas songs are about it being WARM out? "Baby it's WARM outside...." just doesn't have the same effect. Sorry. I'm totally on board with pauly!

Interestingly, the same list applies to the "other" side of the Rockies where I now find myself, except for #10 ...

I miss Colorado.

Okay, so pauly makes some good points. But it's hard for me to focus on that when the palm trees are swaying.

It could be worse... you could have left all your friends behind and moved to Rexburg where it's about 50 degrees colder than you are whining about... the closest shopping is 40 miles away and the entire town shuts down COMPLETELY on Sundays. (Not that there's anything wrong with that.) Livin' the good life!!

I love Pauly's list....I wish more of the people in southern California would read it and move to Colorado...Kristy's (Vern) MOM....

Get over it!!! How long have you lived in Colorado?? Weren't all your kids born there?? Sorry to say that there comes a time when you have to give up California. Carlos loves his job, so I doubt that you will EVER move. DEAL WITH IT. From now on when you are out of Colorado and someone asks you where you are from, you do NOT say I live in Colorado but am orginally from California. You just say I'm from Colorado. I have given up California and I am loving that I don't live there anymore. The person who wrote about Rexburg, I'm only 30 mins south and it's hard to send your kids to the bus stop when it's 2 degrees outside.

Wow. I love Pauly's list, there. While California is beautiful and fun to visit, I prefer my mountains, even if it is snowing like crazy all weekend. That just gives us a reason to drink hot chocolate, right?

Do you have any idea how many ways I can cook a potato??

So....even though our Christmas day tradition is going to the beach, I do wish there were real seasons. What do you people do with your children all winter? It rained all day today and our trip to the library didn't cut it for our kids. I can't count how many times we sent them to their rooms today....does that make me a bad parent?

Vanessa:

We bundle them up in their snow clothes and send them outside to build snow men/forts.

Or go sledding.

Or take them up to the mountains skiing.

Or go snowshoeing.

Or make hot chocolate and cookies together.

Falling snow actually enhances all of these activities.

And then once you have 10 layers of clothes on them they all decide they have to pee.....hmmm. I have vivid memories of those circumstances growing up in Lake Tahoe. Either way...there are definitely pros and cons:) We have to read books about snowmen...it would be nice to actually show that they do exist! ha ha...happy new year!

Not gonna lie. I hate the Denver airport. I got stuck in it during the big blizzard right before Christmas in 06. Also right before my wedding. I won't fly out of there again.. but I'm glad you like it.
